In short

SheetVideo converts Guitar Pro files in every version (.gp, .gpx, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3) to standard MIDI, keeping every track, the tempo changes and the time signatures. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded: there is no server on the other end that sees it.

What comes across
  1. Every track (guitars, bass, keys, drums) or just the ones you tick, each with its instrument
  2. Tempo changes and time signature changes
  3. Drums on the General MIDI drum channel, so any drum plugin plays them
  4. Every note at its pitch, with ties joined
  5. Repeats and alternate endings, written out in the order they are played
  6. The song title
What does not, and why
  1. Strings and frets: MIDI knows the pitch, not where it is played
  2. Bends, slides and vibrato are written as plain notes
  3. Palm mutes and let ring
  4. Lyrics and chord diagrams

Guitar Pro files, every version

Guitar Pro has changed formats several times: .gp3, .gp4 and .gp5 are the older binary files, .gpx came with Guitar Pro 6, and .gp is the zipped format of Guitar Pro 7 and 8. Tabs downloaded from Songsterr or Ultimate Guitar are usually one of these. All of them open here.

MIDI keeps what can be heard and drops what is about the hand: a note on the 5th fret of the A string and the same note on the open D string are the same MIDI note. If you need the tab itself in another program, convert to MusicXML instead, which carries the string and fret of every note.

The file is read in your browser and never uploaded: there is no server on the other end that sees it.

Questions

Why these tools are free

They are pieces of SheetVideo

SheetVideo puts sheet music and tab on videos of people playing, lined up with the recording by listening to it. To do that it has to read every score format there is, and write them out again. These pages are those readers and writers, opened up. The video is the part that is paid, and only for full-length exports without the small mark.
