In short

SheetVideo converts Guitar Pro files (.gp, .gpx, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3) to MusicXML with a notation staff and a tab staff for guitar and bass, keeping the string and fret of every note, the tuning and the capo. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded: there is no server on the other end that sees it.

What comes across
  1. A notation staff and a tab staff for every guitar and bass track; vocals and keys as notation
  2. All the tracks, or only the ones you tick
  3. The string and fret of every note
  4. The tuning, including drop and open tunings, and the capo
  5. Bends, hammer-ons and slides, as MusicXML technical marks
  6. Tempo changes, time signatures, ties, tuplets and rests
  7. Drum tracks as percussion notation
What does not, and why
  1. Palm mutes, let ring and vibrato are not written yet
  2. Lyrics and chord diagrams
  3. Two voices on one staff come out as one voice of chords

Why convert Guitar Pro to MusicXML

Guitar Pro files only open properly in Guitar Pro and a few tab players. MusicXML opens almost everywhere: MuseScore (free), Sibelius, Dorico, Finale, and Guitar Pro itself. Converting is how a tab from Songsterr or an old .gp5 gets into MuseScore with the tab intact.

Most converters write guitar as notation only and let the receiving program guess the frets again. This one writes the tab staff with each note’s string and fret as they were in the Guitar Pro file, plus the tuning, so a drop D riff stays a drop D riff.

The file is read in your browser and never uploaded: there is no server on the other end that sees it.

Why these tools are free

They are pieces of SheetVideo

SheetVideo puts sheet music and tab on videos of people playing, lined up with the recording by listening to it. To do that it has to read every score format there is, and write them out again. These pages are those readers and writers, opened up. The video is the part that is paid, and only for full-length exports without the small mark.
