Your file never leaves your computer. It is converted here, in this tab.

In short

SheetVideo converts MusicXML (.musicxml, .mxl and .xml) to standard MIDI, keeping every part as a track, tempo and time signature changes, and dynamics as note velocity. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded: there is no server on the other end that sees it.

What comes across
  1. Every part, each its own track with its instrument
  2. Tempo and time signature changes
  3. Dynamics, played louder and softer
  4. Ties joined into one held note
  5. Compressed .mxl files as well as plain .musicxml
What does not, and why
  1. Everything about the page: spelling, layout, slurs and text
  2. Repeats play once, as written on the page

From a notation file to something that plays

MusicXML is how notation programs pass scores to each other; MIDI is what DAWs, practice apps and keyboards play. Converting is how a MuseScore download becomes a backing track, or a part to practise along with at half speed.

Dynamics in the score set how hard each note is played, so a pp passage really is quiet.

Questions

Why these tools are free

They are pieces of SheetVideo

SheetVideo puts sheet music and tab on videos of people playing, lined up with the recording by listening to it. To do that it has to read every score format there is, and write them out again. These pages are those readers and writers, opened up. The video is the part that is paid, and only for full-length exports without the small mark.
